Malayalam actor Nazriya Nazim recently opened up about life with husband-actor Fahadh Faasil after his clinical diagnosis of Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). “Ya, he is an ADHD patient, but I’ve known him… even before he realised this, or before we got here (to the diagnosis). He might have had this (condition) always,” Nazim told Malayalam Manorama.

“We have lived like that. It’s become part of our lives. Yes, now that the diagnosis has happened, I probably have a little more patience. It helps in that sense. Otherwise, it’s all the same,” she added.

Dealing with a partner’s diagnosis of ADHD can be challenging, but it also presents an opportunity to grow together and strengthen the relationship, said Sahiba Rattan Sethi, counselling psychologist, founder – Ummeed Healing.

While it may bring challenges, it can deepen the bond if both partners commit to understanding and adapting. “It requires mutual effort, patience, and a shared willingness to work through the condition together. Embracing this journey with love can make the relationship even stronger. It is challenging to deal with ADHD partners, but it’s possible to manage these symptoms if proper care and awareness is there,” said Sethi.

To understand ADHD, it’s necessary to take guidance on how to handle their behavior, said Sethi.

Educate yourself: Learn about ADHD—its symptoms, challenges, and strengths. Understanding your partner’s condition helps you empathise and communicate better.
Acknowledge the impact: Recognise how ADHD affects emotions, attention, memory, and behavior. “This awareness helps in managing expectations,” said Sethi.

Adapting to changes

Revisit expectations: Accept that some habits or patterns may need adjustment. For example, tasks requiring focus might take longer.
Be flexible: ADHD often brings impulsivity and disorganization. Flexibility in routines can ease frustration.
Adjust communication styles: Use clear, direct, and compassionate communication. ADHD can affect listening and focus, so avoid overly complex conversations.
