Kuch Kuch Hota Hai remains one of the most iconic Bollywood films of all time. The trio — Rahul, Anjali and Tina — played by Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, respectively, forever remain etched in our memories. From its hopeless romantic vibes to its blockbuster songs, KKHH is in a league of its own. It might have not aged well with modern audiences, but one thing that has stayed relevant to date is its quintessential fashion.

Be it Anjali’s classic chiffon saris or Tina’s miniskirts, you can’t deny its timelessness in today’s fashion sensibilities. All these fashion statements can be credited to ace designer Manish Malhotra who worked the wardrobe of the characters of Karan Johar’s directorial debut. So, when the designer won seven awards for the film’s costume and styling, it came as no surprise.

As the cult-favourite celebrates its 25th anniversary, we decode why KKHH’s fashion remains as ‘cool’ as it was back in 1998.

Thanks to the revival of 2000s trends in the modern lexicon, designer Shilpa Gupta says that KKHH’s fashion is as relevant as it was when it was first released. “The film established several trends that are still in use today, as the movie’s portrayal of fashion broke traditional notions of style. These qualities of non-conformity are greatly admired by the Gen-Z, who have embraced phenomenal gender-neutral denim jackets, chunky shoes, stylish sunglasses, and wide headbands, shown in the movie in their daily wardrobe.”

Citing an example, Devender Singh Kharb, dean, School of Fashion, World University of Design (WUD), Sonipat notes that the film challenged traditional notions of formal attire by normalising the inclusion of miniskirts in formal outfits. “Rani Mukerji’s character, Tina, sported this look with confidence — making it a style statement that many young women embraced. This departure from conventional dressing norms opened the door to a more modern and chic approach to formal fashion.”

In contrast to Rani’s character Tina, designer Leena Singh, founder of the label Ashima Leena, shares that Kajol’s character Anjali popularised a tomboyish and athletic aesthetic by dressing in baggy jeans, oversized t-shirts, and sneakers — reminiscent of gender-inclusive clothing.

Agreeing, Sonia Tommy, lead research analyst at ICH NEXT and ex-senior stylist at Yash Raj Films, attributes the success of the film’s fashion to the “bold comeback of the 90s and Y2K era”. “It brought a street style variant, athleisure clothing and a style synonymous to airport looks with Kajol and SRK in sporty ensembles. The bold Polo printed shirts, Gap jackets, Speedo jersey, or the DKNY tracksuits came to life on a basketball court in the movie, introducing India and its youth to ‘logo mania’ in luxury fashion.”

It also marked a significant shift in fashion as it opened the concept of branded clothing to Indian markets, according to Kharb. “The characters in the film adorned outfits with prominent logos and brand names — making branded apparel a symbol of status and sophistication. This was a transformative moment for Indian fashion, as people began to value and seek out branded clothing as a sign of affluence.”

Similarly, the film’s portrayal of luxury brand monograms, such as Louis Vuitton’s iconic LV or Gucci’s GG, created a visual trend that people wanted to incorporate into their style, says Kharb, adding that the film played a pivotal role in reshaping the Indian fashion scene.

KKHH’s use of vibrant, fluorescent colours in clothing also left a lasting impression. “These bold and lively hues continue to be a part of the fashion landscape. In recent years, fluorescent colours have made a comeback in both casual and formal wear — reflecting the enduring influence of the film’s fashion choices,” says Kharb.

Apart from this, the film’s influence extended beyond clothing to hairstyles. The straightened hair look, which was popularised by characters like Tina and Anjali, remains a timeless and widely adopted style. “Straight hair is often considered a classic choice that suits various occasions,” Kharb explains.

Some of the top fashion moments from the film have to be “SRK’s metallic neck piece that read ‘C.O.O.L’ — a trend hugely adopted by every collegiate boy at the time and of course Kajol’s cropped blunt haircut with elastic headbands, one I am guilty as charged to have mimicked to the ‘T’,” quips Tommy.

As per Kharb, Anjali’s style transformation in the movie from a “tomboy sporting dungarees and a more casual, sporty look to a more elegant and mature style, often seen wearing solid-coloured sarees”, remains notable as it showcases the versatility of fashion in reflecting character development.
