IMD is not a location specific job, a candidate may get Delhi or Chennai as their first postings or can be transferred later on in their career. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the examination for the recruitment of scientific assistant in the department. This is one of the entry level posts of the department.

A candidate who is interested for the opportunity must have a bachelor’s degree in Science (with Physics as one of the subject)/ computer science/ information technology/ computer applications or diploma in electronics and telecommunication engineering from a recognised institution or university, or equivalent.

IMD also hires candidates through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Higher-level positions or specialised roles often require experience in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, research, or related areas.

Apart from scientific assistant, there are several roles including technician and support staff, statistical, research, and data analysis roles, and computer science and IT roles. For different roles, the eligibility criteria and educational qualification differs. For instance for technical and support staff,  a candidate will need a bachelors qualifications in electronics, electrical engineering, or meteorology. Similarly for data analysis roles, a bachelor’s or master’s in statistics, mathematics, or data science is typically required.
