A 20-year-old labourer was arrested for raping a woman with mental disabilities after she was found in a state of partial undress and wandering on the streets of Indore in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to Indore ADCP Zone-1 Alok Sharma, the incident occurred at between 2:30 am and 3 am Tuesday morning and was allegedly captured on CCTV. The suspect Sonu alias Sahil Soni, originally belonging to Sagar, allegedly took the woman to a secluded spot and raped her.

“Yesterday we got information that an unidentified woman who was mentally challenged was raped. A complaint was registered at a local police station following which an FIR was registered in connection with the case,” Sharma said.

Around 4 am, some sanitation workers alerted the police of the survivor wandering the streets. Police eventually found her in a park and took her in for questioning but she allegedly couldn’t provide any information. However, she was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical examination where doctors allegedly confirmed the rape.

CCTV footage from the spot captured “parts of the incident”, police said. The suspect, Sonu, was produced before a local court Wednesday and was remanded in judicial custody.

Investigation revealed that the woman had “walked for about half a kilometer without clothes after being assaulted,” said a police officer.
