As another year draws to a close, we like every other year, like to look at the data and see what India read in the months past. 2023 was an eventful year, and, thankfully, without any help from the pandemic which has been plaguing our lives for the past few years. There were political events, sporting events and cultural events that kept readers engaged, an uphill task by any count these days.

It was not surprising that the top topic for the hundreds of millions of readers who engaged with indianexpress.com in the past year was ‘India’ and ‘Indian’, and a third of that number also read stories related to the BJP and Congress. Shah Rukh Khan, who has helped revive Bollywood’s fortunes this year, was the most popular personality, followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and actors Amitabh Bachchan and Salman KhanPriyanka Chopra was the most popular woman, ahead of Alia Bhatt. Mumbai was the more popular city in terms of stories, ahead of Delhi. SRK’s Jawan was the most popular movie ahead of Gadar 2. Despite all the interest around Canada, our readers found stories from Australia and Pakistan more engaging. Two institutions that remained in the news through the year were the Supreme Court and ISRO, which completed a successful moon mission in 2023. In the world of tech, Instagram was our most engaging topic, though well below the interest generated by Chandrayaan-3.

Despite this being such a newsy year in politics, the most popular story was about how a surprise birthday trip to Manali turned into a nightmare for Pune couple, a story that was read by almost 2 million readers. The second most popular story was the Karnataka elections results earlier in the year, followed by the Chandrayaan-3 moon landing. While a side story on how Lionel Messi’s wife reacts to Shakira’s Insta post went crazy viral at the start of the year, the top sports story for us was the Chennai Super King’s IPL victory over Gujarat Titans which found more reader interest than the World Cup finals.
