Delhi court grants Umar Khalid 2-week interim bail to attend sister’s wedding

A Delhi court has granted two weeks of interim bail to Umar Khalid in the 2020 Delhi riots case, allowing him to attend his sister’s wedding.

His regular bail in the 2020 riots case is still pending.

A Delhi trial court has approved two weeks of interim bail for Umar Khalid to attend his sister’s wedding.

A Delhi court on Thursday granted interim bail from December 16 to 29 to former JNU student Umar Khalid – an accused in the case regarding the larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots – to attend his sister’s wedding on December 27.

“Considering the fact that the marriage is of the real sister of the applicant, the application is allowed and the applicant is granted interim bail from 16.12.2025 to 29.12.2025 on furnishing of personal bond of Rs 20,000 with two sureties of the like amount subject to the following conditions,” said Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Court.

The court also ordered Khalid not to use social media and only meet his family members, relatives and friends. “Further, he shall remain at his home or at the places where the ceremonies of marriage as mentioned by him will take place,” the court said.

This will be Khalid’s third visit home, as he has been granted interim bail twice earlier. He has spent nearly six years in jail in connection to the case.

Khalid, along with 17 others, is facing allegations of indulging in “larger conspiracy” to cause the riots in Northeast Delhi between February 23, 2020 and February 25, 2020, which left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.

Booked for offences under the Indian Penal Code, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, he has been described as a “veteran of sedition” by the Delhi Police Special Cell in its chargesheet.
