The condition of CPI(M) general secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury, who is undergoing treatment at AIIMS in Delhi for an acute respiratory tract infection, is critical, his party said on Tuesday.

Yechury, 72, was admitted to the Emergency Ward of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on August 19. He was later shifted to the intensive care unit.

“He is on respiratory support.  A multi-disciplinary team of doctors is closely monitoring his condition, which is critical at this time,” the CPM said in a statement.

Yechury succeeded Prakash Karat as the general secretary of the CPM in 2015.
