Singhvi said the agencies were delaying trial by continuing probe for 2 years, filing supplementary chargesheets and making other arrests. The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to entertain former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s bail plea in the excise policy scam case as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) assured that it will file the final chargesheet against him by July 3.
Noting the assurance, a vacation bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and Sandeep Mehta disposed of the bail plea and said Sisodia can revive it once the chargesheet is filed. The court was hearing the plea against the Delhi HC order dismissing his bail plea.
Senior Advocate A M Sighvi told the bench that Sisodia who was arrested in February 2023, had already spent about 15 months in jail but the trial in the case is yet to start. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said Sisodia was delaying framing of charges by filing different applications for supplying digital evidence even though those were supplied.
Singhvi said the agencies were delaying trial by continuing probe for 2 years, filing supplementary chargesheets and making other arrests.
Justice Kumar told SG Mehta that from Singhvi’s submissions, it is seen that there is no delay attributable to Sisodia and sought to know when the trial will begin. Justice Mehta said that in such cases, the delay may not be attributable to either side and it may be inevitable given the sheer volume of evidence.
