Chennai weather: forecast

Moderate to rather heavy rain expected to occur at many places over Chennai and its neighbourhood.

The very severe cyclonic storm Thane over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west southwest wards and lay centred at 8.30 am today,about 270 kilometre east of Puducherry and at about 250 km east-southeast of Chennai. The system is likely to move westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu coast between Nagapattinam and Chennai,close to Puducherry around morning of December 30,2011.

Isolated rainfall occurred over Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Dry weather prevailed over Telangana,Rayalaseema,Karnataka,Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Vizianagaram,Cheepurupalli and Ranasthalam recorded 1 centimetre of rainfall each.

Moderate cold wave conditions prevailed over some parts of Interior Karnataka.

The minimum temperature rose markedly to appreciably at one or two places over Tamil Nadu,coastal Andhra Pradesh,rose at one or two places over rest Tamil Nadu,rest Coastal Andhra Pradesh,South Interior Karnataka,Telangana,fell at one or two places over North Kerala,north Interior Karnataka,rest South Interior Karnataka and changed little elsewhere over the region.

They were markedly to appreciably below normal at many places over Karnataka,at one or two places Tamil Nadu,Telangana,below normal at one or two places over Kerala,rest of Coastal Karnataka,rest of Tamil Nadu,rest of Telangana,appreciably above normal at one or two places over coastal Andhra Pradesh,above normal at one or two places over rest coastal Andhra Pradesh and were generally normal over the rest of the region.

Adilabad recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 7 degree Celsius in the plains of the region.

Weather forecast valid until morning of Dec 31:

Rain or thundershower would occur at a many places over north Tamil Nadu,Puducherry,Rayalaseema and south coastal Andhra Pradesh. Isolated rain or thundershower may occur over south Tamil Nadu,south Kerala,Lakshadweep,south interior Karnataka and north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over coastal and north interior Karnataka,Telangana and north Kerala.

HEAVY RAINFALL WARNING: Heavy to very heavy rain would occur at a few places with Isolated extremely heavy falls (>25 cms) over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 48 hours. Isolated heavy to very heavy rain would also occur over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema during the same period.

Squally weather warning:-Squally weather with wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph likely along and of north Tamil Nadu,Puducherry and south Andhra coast during next 24 hours.

Gale Wind warning:-Gale force wind with speed reaching 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph would prevail along off north Tamil Nadu,Puducherry and south Andhra coast from today night on wards.

TIDAL WAVE WARNING: Tidal wave with height 1.0 metres above astronomical tide would inundate the low lying areas of Chennai,Tiruvallur,Kanchipuram,Cuddalore,Villupuram and Nagapattinam districts of North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Karaikal area at the time of storm crossing the coast.

Sea condition: sea condition will be very rough. It will gradually become very high to phenomenal along and off North Tamilnadu,Puducherry and Karaikal area and South Andhra coast.

Fishermen along North Tamilnadu,Puducherry and Karaikal area and South Andhra coast are advised not to venture into sea during next 48 hours.

FORECAST FOR CHENNAI CITY AND NEIGHBOURHOOD:

For next 24 hours: The sky conditions would be generally cloudy. A few spells of rain or thundershowers would occur heavily at times.

Surface wind will be strong and gusty at times.

Farmers’ weather bulletin forecast valid until the morning of December 31,2011: Moderate to rather heavy rain would occur at many places over Chennai,Kancheepuram,Tiruvallur,Cuddalore,Villupuram,Thanjavur,Tiruvarur,Nagapattinam,Pudukottai,Tiruvannamalai,Vellore,Dharmapuri,Krishnagiri,Namakkal,Salem,Coimbatore,Tiruppur,Erode,Nilgiris,Karur,Perambalur,Ariyalur and Tiruchirapalli districts of Tamilnadu and in Puducherry. . Isolated light to moderate rain may also occur over remaining districts of Tamil Nadu.

HEAVY RAINFALL WARNING:-Heavy to very heavy rain would occur at a few places with Isolated extremely heavy falls (>25 cms) over North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 48 hours.

OUTLOOK FOR SUBSEQUENT TWO DAYS: No significant change.
