Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against Mirwaiz Umar Farooq,chairman of the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference,over burning of government properties by a mob during a protest rally here,official sources said today.
An FIR was registered against the Mirwaiz at Shaheedgunj police station in Srinagar city under sections 121,121-A,153,153-A,336 and 446 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC),the sources said.
The case was registered after he held a protest rally at Lal Chowk yesterday. Police say participants from the rally later set on fire three government offices,including the Crime Branch and Power Development Department headquarters.
The Mirwaiz called for an half-an-hour sit in protest in the heart of the city and later left for his home despite assurances made by him that the crowd will disperse quietly after the sit-in.
