The Kerala Police registered a case last Friday accusing the Congress legislator of raping a woman, recording explicit visuals of her without consent, and forcing her to terminate her pregnancy. With non-bailable charges filed, Rahul Mamkootathil has been missing since the case surfaced, prompting the police to intensify efforts to trace him.

Rahul Mamkootathil is a young politician and entrepreneur from Palakkad in Kerala. He currently represents the Palakkad constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Considered one of the emerging faces within the Congress, Mamkootathil built his political credentials through the youth wings of the party and went on to hold leadership roles, gaining strong visibility in state politics.

His political journey took a turn in August 2025 when multiple allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced against him. The scandal threatens to shadow the Congress amidst the local body elections slated for December 9 and 11. However, Mamkootathil has been active in campaigning for party candidates in local bodies under his Palakkad Assembly constituency. Following the complaints, the Congress took disciplinary action and suspended him from the primary membership of the party. The allegations triggered widespread public reactions and pushed party leadership to intervene immediately.

Legal setback

Legal developments escalated the situation after Rahul’s anticipatory bail plea was rejected in court. Following the order, the police stepped up their efforts to trace him. Investigators detained his driver, who allegedly assisted him in leaving the state and stated that they were not ruling out the possibility of Rahul surrendering soon.
