(PTI Photo) Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra reacted to the controversy surrounding Rahul Gandhi allegedly ‘blowing a flying kiss’ to the Treasury benches side during the no-trust vote debate on Wednesday (August 9), and decried Women and Child (Development) minister Smriti Irani for her silence over women wrestler’s allegations of sexual harassment against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh, questioning “her priorities”.
“When a BJP MP was accused of harassment and molestation by our champion wrestlers, we didn’t hear a word out from the Women and Child (Development) minister and now she is talking about some ‘flying kiss’. Where are your priorities?” Moitra said outside Parliament on Thursday.
Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal, too, had weighed in on the row and asked why there is no anger towards Singh, who is still seated in Parliament.
“An alleged flying kiss thrown in the air caused so much fire, while a man named Brij Bhushan is seated two rows behind. The one who called Olympian wrestlers in the room and put his hand on his chest, put his hand on his waist and sexually assaulted them. Why don’t you get angry at what he did?” wrote Maliwal.
The no-confidence motion debate in the Lok Sabha took an unexpected turn on Wednesday when Union Minister Smriti Irani accused Congress MP Rahul Gandhi of “blowing a flying kiss” during her speech in Lok Sabha, and some women MPs from the BJP lodged a complaint with Speaker Om Birla, seeking “stringent action” for the “inappropriate gesture”.
The complaint to Speaker Om Birla was signed by more than 20 women parliamentarians, including Karandlaje and Union minister Darshana Jardosh. “We demand stringent action against such behaviour by the member which has not only insulted the dignity of the women members in the House but has also brought disrepute and lowered the dignity of this august House,” the women MPs said in their complaint against the Wayanad MP.
Sources in the Lok Sabha secretariat said the videos from Sansad TV were not clear but the matter would be looked into.
Shiv Sena (UBT) Priyanka Chaturvedi Wednesday said, “He (Rahul) gave a pyaar bhara (affectionate) gesture, what problem do you (BJP) have with that? You are so habitual to hatred that you can’t understand a gesture of love. You disqualified Rahul Gandhi as an MP and kicked him out of his house. He has come back after winning his cases. He’s still not talking with hatred towards you.”
Reacting to the incident, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Rahul Gandhi’s gestures had caused “much pain”. “He gives a flying kiss. What has happened to Rahul Gandhi? So many women are seated there (in the House). He has no manners,” he said.
