Mountaineer’s condition better, may be off ventilator soon

Rescued Indian mountaineer Anurag Maloo has moved his toes and may be taken off ventilator support on Sunday if his condition improves, doctors at Nepal Mediciti Hospital in Kathmandu valley said on Friday. Maloo, who fell into a crevasse below the 6,000 metres point between camp 3 and camp 2 while descending Mount Annapurna on April 17, was found alive on April 20.

The first time that Chhang Dawa Sherpa (41) heard about Maloo (34), he was on the phone with helicopter firms to organise rescue operations for stranded mountaineers on April 17. His query on Maloo that afternoon in Pokhara led to him spearheading one of the “riskiest rescue efforts in the world”.

Director of Kathmandu-based commercial adventure operator, Dawa said, “We didn’t hope to find him alive… He had been lying in a freezer for 68 hours…” Elation over his rescue was eclipsed by signs of “gangrene”, but he soon recovered.
