Metro rail network, Metro rail expansion in South India: The metro rail network is witnessing rapid progress. Currently, about 1,083 km of metro rail network, including RRTS corridors is operational across 25 cities in the country. In a statement, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) said that metro rail projects are capital-intensive and require extensive appraisal under the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.
The approval of such projects depends on the feasibility of the proposals and the availability of resources, and therefore no specific timeline can be fixed for their sanction, it added.
At present, 251.36 km of new metro rail lines are under construction across four southern states – Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on December 11. The Union Minister also stated that a total of 247.68 km of metro rail network is currently operational across these states.
Among the metro rail projects under construction in southern India, Karnataka tops the list with 121.16 km of lines under development, followed by Tamil Nadu with 119 km and Kerala with 11.2 km.
Meanwhile, in terms of operational metro rail networks in the region, Karnataka again leads with 96.1 km in service, followed by Telangana with 69 km, Tamil Nadu with 54.10 km and Kerala with 28.48 km.
As per Metro Rail Policy, 2017 cities having a population of two million and more may start planning for mass transit systems including metro rail based on the Comprehensive Mobility Plan. Apart from these, the central government has launched PM e-Bus Sewa scheme with outlay of Rs. 20,000 Cr for deployment of 10,000 air conditioned e-buses.
