Manipur sets up anti-extortion cell

To counter the growing menace of extortion in the state, Manipur Police have established an anti-extortion cell, which will be headed by the ADGP (Law and Order). All zonal DIGs are members of the cell tasked with monitoring and supervising the anti-extortion drive.

K Kabib, IGP of Intelligence, said the anti-extortion cell was formed after numerous complaints were received from the general public, including educational institutions, and government employees, among others regarding extortions after the ethnic violence broke out in May last year.

District police, with assistance from other security agencies, have established 15 crack teams dedicated to combating extortion, he said. Over the past year, more than 121 extortionists have been arrested. ENS
