Shopian killings: Curfew continues for seventh consecutive day

Curfew was first clamped in Shopian on Sept 8,following clashes.

Shopian town in south Kashmir continued to remain under curfew for the seventh consecutive day on Wednesday following killing of five persons in CRPF firing in two separate incidents on September 7 and September 11.

“Curfew continues in Shopian township as a precautionary measure,” a police spokesman said.

September 8,following wide-spread clashes after the killing

of four persons in CRPF firing a day earlier.

The prohibitory orders were lifted on September 11,but curfew was re-imposed in the town next day following clashes between the protesters and security forces which led to the killing of another youth,taking the toll to five.

However,official sources said the restrictions were eased late last evening to allow people to buy essential commodities as there was no relaxation in curfew since September 12.

A high-level ministerial delegation visited the affected town on Tuesday to take stock of the situation.
