Twenty Indian fishermen have been arrested and four boats seized for allegedly intruding into Pakistani waters,an official statement said today.
The fishermen were apprehended by the Maritime Security Agency in the early hours on Wednesday.
The fishermen were arrested for their alleged “continuous intrusion of Pakistani waters”,officials claimed.
The fishermen were handed over to police in Karachi for “necessary action”,the officials said.
India and Pakistan detain hundreds of fishermen every year on charges of violating the maritime boundary.
The two countries have taken steps in recent months to expedite the release of fishermen who have completed their jail terms.
Police in Karachi registered a case against the 20 fishermen under the Foreigners Act and Fishery Act.
The four boats seized by the authorities were ‘Manga Raj’,’Gadia Karia’,’Nerigar’ and ‘Ganga’.
