PAC and Purulia: BJP-Cong war of words hots up

The Opposition accused the PM of 'direct complicity' in the 2G scam.

The war of words between BJP and Congress over PAC and Purulia issues intensified on Friday with the Opposition accusing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of “direct complicity” in the 2G spectrum scam and the Congress hitting back charging the saffron party and the Left with trying to destabilise the government.

A day after chaos descended over the proceedings of the PAC,BJP went on the offensive with senior leader Yashwant Sinha charging the Prime Minister and the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram with “direct complicity” in the 2G spectrum scam being dubbed by the Opposition as the biggest in independent India.

Reacting sharply,Congress came down heavily on BJP and the Left accusing them of displaying blatant opportunism, collusion and complicity and converting the PAC into a BJP-Left party forum.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi also attacked PAC Chairman Murli Manohar Joshi for showing “unholy haste” in “doing the BJP’s bidding” with active support from the Left.

At a Press conference,Sinha,a former Finance Minister and member of the PAC,launched a strong attack on the Congress,DMK and “their new-found allies” SP and BSP members of the PAC for their behaviour in the parliamentary panel’s meeting yesterday to discuss the draft report on 2G issue.

“We are all hurt by the conduct of the members. This is perhaps the first time that a Parliamentary committee has behaved in this manner,” he said.

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat utilised the two issues to target the Congress and the Centre in the midst of the West Bengal assembly polls where the Trinamool Congress-led alliance is giving the Left a run for its money.

Karat disapproved of the way Congress and DMK MPs behaved at the PAC meeting, saying it showed that they wanted to scuttle any report on 2G spectrum scam.

He also demanded a judicial probe into Purulia arms drop case alleging “gross negligence” of the then central government in handling the same which was meant to destabilize the Jyoti Basu government in West Bengal.
