Defence Minister A K Antony on Tuesday said infiltration attempts into Kashmir from across the border were increasing with conscious, calculated attempts to push more terrorists into the valley.
The situation is not grim, but is still a matter of concern. As Defence minister,I think compared to the past the situation has improved substantially. Violence levels have come down, tourist visits this year were more than last year. However, infiltration attempts are increasing, he said.
After witnessing the rollout of the naval version of the Light Combat Aircraft,Antony told reporters that when the situation becomes normal, enemies operating from across the border become panicky and jittery and problems had been anticipated this summer.
He said there were conscious calculated attempt to push more terrorists into Kashmir.
However, the armed forces by and large had managed to defeat the attempts of terrorists and bring the security situation under control. The security situation is under control, violence has come down, tourist season is going on smoothly compared to the past, barring some incidents, he said.
But,we have to be on guard. Enemies from across the border are still operating, terrorist camps across the border are still active,we are concerned about the situation.
To a question on Pakistan,he said At the moment,we have not seen anything on the ground regarding action against terrorists operating from across the border. India must watch and see how things unfold, but meanwhile, talks must go on and efforts to build relationship must go on,Antony said.
India must continue to be alert as terrorists continue to operate from across the border. We cannot lower our guard.
Antony said the government was doing everything possible to increase confidence among people and was ready to extend all support to the Jammu and Kashmir government to ensure speedy economic development and restore peace and normalcy.
Government is aware of the implications and forces working there and will do whatever possible to bring more peace and more development in Kashmir, he said.
On Naxal issue,Antony said The Naxal problem is proving to be a serious threat to the country and the government is aware of the problem. The government had adopted a two-pronged strategy to deal with it including development of the tribal belt,he said.
On the role of the armed forces in controlling the Naxal problem,Antony said Armed forces are meant for the borders.
Using armed forces for law and order is the last resort.
The state government machinery and paramilitary force can tackle Naxal problems. The Army will give it the logistic support, training and aircraft, the Defence Minister said, adding army units will also be stationed in Chhattisgarh.
