(File Photo)As scorching Indian summers return, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued heatwave warnings for multiple states. While several states in the eastern, southern and central parts are expected to see a rise in temperatures in the upcoming days, other parts may get some respite, with IMD predicting rainfall.
Parts of West Bengal and Odisha are set to be hit worst with rising temperatures for the coming days from April 22 to April 26. The national weather agency has issued ‘severe heatwave’ alert for isolated pockets of Odisha and Gangetic and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal during this time.
Temperatures in these states are likely to push past 40 degree celsius on Monday and Tuesday, the weather body further reported. Nights are also unlikely to bring any respite to the heat as ‘warm night condition’ alerts for the states have also been issued by IMD over the two days.
Moreover, slightly less intense though similar weather is expected to prevail in Bihar and Jharkhand as well as eastern Uttar Pradesh over the next five days. IMD, for these three states, has issued ‘heatwave condition’ warnings until April 26.
On Sunday, the maximum temperatures across the country were recorded to be between 42 to 45 degree celsius in parts of Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand. The same was also observed in isolated pockets of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
IMD predicts ‘hot and humid’ climate for the majority of the southern states where temperatures are starting to crawl up.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala are expected to see the weather getting hotter and more humid over the next four days until April 26.
Some respite from the heat is due in parts of West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand as IMD has also issued warnings for thundersorm with lightning and gusty winds up to 30-40 kmph and light/moderate rainfall for the states from April 22 to 24. Sikkim is also expected to experience similar climate over the two days.
Additionally, the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya are also predicted to witness rainfall. While ‘isolated heavy rainfall’ alerts have been issued for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya until April 25; the rain is expected to get particularly intense for Arunachal on April 23.
Other states which are likely to see rainfall/snowfall over Monday and Tuesday are Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, eastern Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh. The southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka are likely to be lashed with rain and thunderstorms especially on Monday. Also, rainfall in parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have further been predicted to extend to Wednesday and Thursday.
