Haryana MLAs O P Jain and Zile Ram Sharma allegedly took money from Sarpanch Karam Singh and promised to provide jobs to his son and relatives but failed to return the money when that did not materialise, forcing the sarpanch to commit suicide, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chargesheet in the case reveals.
The chargesheet states that Jain,a former transport minister, allegedly accepted Rs 4.5 lakh from Singh, the former sarpanch of Kambopura village in Karnal while Sharma,a former chief parliamentary secretary, allegedly took Rs 7.5 lakh from the sarpanch,a deal that was allegedly facilitated by his personal secretary,Rajender Sharma.
Singh allegedly committed suicide when the jobs were not provided and the duo failed to return the money. The CBI has lodged an abetment to suicide case against the two MLAs and Sharma.
Superintendent of police (CBI) Tarun Gauba said: It has been established that the money was paid to the two MLAs and since they didnt return it to the sarpanch,he was forced to commit suicide. Gauba, however, added that the custodial interrogation of the two MLAs was not required. We called the two MLAs earlier for investigations and they co-operated which is why they have not been arrested, he said.
Despite the fact that there were multiple injuries on the sarpanchs body, the SP said that the murder charge couldnt be proved. We have evidence against the MLAs that they forced the sarpanch to commit suicide, but during the course of investigation it couldnt be proved that the accused conspired to murder him, he said.
Singh was found dead after he had filed a complaint against the two MLAs while a key witness in the case,Chamel Singh, was also found dead under mysterious circumstances. While Sharma is the Assandh MLA,Jain is the MLA from Panipat. The sarpanch had written to the police and administration pointing out that he was not being returned the money that he had paid for jobs for his son and relatives.
