An emotional Mukul Sangma,Chief Minister of Meghalaya, said it was he who had told his niece Dana to take admission in Amity University in Gurgaon where she did not want to go.
She wanted to enroll in some university in Dehradun but I told her to join Amity University as it is a reputed institution. This is a personal loss and I feel very bad now, Sangma told The Indian Express from Shillong.
Reminiscing about his niece Dana,Sangma said he was very close to her as she often spoke to him over phone.
It is not just the case of Dana, even other students and youths from the Northeast have told me that they have often faced discrimination in the Capital and the NCR region, he said.
Dana was pushed to the wall. No one can take their life unless there is a trigger. After she was caught allegedly cheating during her exam, the university officials made her fill up a questionnaire. In that,Dana stated that she had not been copying and that she had studied well for the examination. The university officials might have made unnecessary allegations and humiliated her. Dana was a promising student, said Sangma.
Sangma said he had also talked to Haryana Chief Minister Bhupindra Singh Hooda over phone and apprised him of the situation. He said he will also send an official letter to Hooda describing how students from the Northeast have been subjected to such discrimination in the past.
