RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan shared some fond memories about first R&AW chief R N Kao at the Kao memorial lecture on Thursday. He said his father Govind Rajan worked with Kao and would get calls from him at all hours of the day and night. Rajan said as children, they had been told to ask “May I know who is speaking?”, whenever they answered a phone call. He said the former R&AW chief would never reply Kao or Mr Kao. It was always “Aaar. En. Kao”.

After passing strictures to its personnel on the use of social media like Twitter and Facebook that have the potential of revealing their identity and locations, the Army has sent across another warning to its formations on the use of new-age messaging tools on cellphones. The new warning emphasises that communication tools like WhatsApp and WeChat that use the Internet on cellphones to send messages and audio should also not be used due to security reasons. WeChat in particular has been identified as being “dangerous” for military personnel as well as all those working in the field of national security.

Stung by the party’s defeat in the Assembly elections, Congress leaders in Delhi seem to be hesitating to suggest candidates for the coming Lok Sabha elections. The party’s state election committee met on Wednesday, but the members did not suggest any names, leaving it to the party high command to select the candidates. The members had been told to give their choices in writing — either the sitting MP or three other names in their order of preference.

Looking Left
The Rajya Sabha elections for five seats in West Bengal may see the Congress and its former ally, the Left, warming up to each other. The CPI(M) is reportedly in talks with the Congress to explore the option of fielding an independent candidate to ensure the defeat of one of the Trinamool Congress’s candidates. The Trinamool Congress has fielded four candidates. While it has enough votes to ensure the victory of three, it needs four more votes for the fourth candidate. If the Congress and the CPI(M) join hands and field an independent candidate, the TMC nominee will be defeated. Sources said the possibility of an independent candidate being fielded from the minority community — acceptable to both the Congress and the Left — could not be ruled out. The fifth seat will go to the Left.
