All eyes are on the elections to the 81-member Nanded Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Sunday. It is being seen as crucial to the political future of former CM Ashok Chavan,Nanded being his home constituency.
Candidates of the Congress and the NCP the two parties failed to forge a pre-poll alliance the Sena-BJP-RPI,MNS and smaller parties are in the fray. Chavan had been looking at consolidating his position in Nanded and the larger Marathwada region to fill the leadership vacuum created in Congress following Vilasrao Deshkmukhs sudden demise.
CM Prithviraj Chavan,Industries Minister Narayan Rane and other senior Congress leaders campaigned for the Congress. Ashok Chavan said: We have fought against Sena and MNS in the past and got absolute majority. This time also we will get a good majority.
NCP leader Ajit Pawar had also held a rally during the campaign. The NCP also managed to get former Independent MLA Pratap Patil Chiklikar to the NCP fold. Being Chavans strong rival,the move is expected to improve the NCP tally.
The Sena-BJP-RPI alliance has candidates in 72 seats. Their campaign witnessed a road show by Sena executive president Udhhav Thackerays son Aditya. MNS is contesting 42 seats but party chief Raj Thackeray did not campaign. Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen has fielded 25 candidates.
