Microsoft,Vedanta staff examined in probe against Kiran Bedi

The Delhi police is probing a case of alleged misappropriation by former IPS officer Kiran Bedi.

The Delhi police has examined the Microsoft and Vedanta Foundation officials and the relevant documents in its probe into a case of alleged misappropriation by former IPS officer Kiran Bedi of funds,meant for an NGO run by her,a court was informed here today.

In its probe status report,submitted today to the court ofAdditional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Bansal,the Crime Branch of Delhi Police said it is investigating the case and will finalise it “at the earliest”.

Microsoft and Vedanta Foundation had made donations to Bedi’s NGOs for various schemes relating to computer education for kids and families of paramilitary personnel of BSF,CISF,ITBP,CRPF and other state police organisations.

“The investigation is in progress and efforts are being made to finalise the investigation at the earliest,” the police stated in its one page status report,in which it also referred to the probe into the allegations against her about inflated bills of air tickets and those for purchase of computers during her stint in the Police Training College.

It said three Microsoft officials have been examined and “relevant documents have been taken into the possession”.

Vedanta Foundation and former employees of Bedi’s NGO India Vision Foundation (IVF) have also been examined and relevant records and documents have been obtained,it stated.

In relation to the allegations of submitting inflated bills for air tickets,the police said details of the air tickets purchased by Bedi and her travel records,have been obtained from the Fly Well Travels.

On the allegation that Bedi had purchased computers at inflated prices during her tenure as Police Training College chief here,the report said as per two special commissioners of police (CP) no inquiry was conducted against her.

The police said “regarding pending inquiry against Kiran Bedi as Principal of Police Training College in connection with the purchase of computers at inflated prices,Special CP,Training and Special CP,Vigilance,clarified that no such enquiry was conducted or pending”.

The probe is being conducted by the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch on an FIR lodged against Bedi on court’s directions on November 26,last year.

The court had ordered lodging of the FIR against Bedi for allegedly cheating and misappropriating funds meant for her NGO along with other allegations.

The court had directed the Crime Branch of Delhi Police to register the case against the key Team Anna member on a complaint by Delhi-based lawyer Devinder Singh Chauhan.

Chauhan had alleged Bedi “looted” various paramilitary forces and state police organisations in the name of imparting free computer training through ‘Meri Police’ under the banner of her trust ‘India Vision Foundation’.

Chauhan,in his complaint,had alleged that Bedi’s NGOs got a donation of more than Rs 50 lakh from Microsoft in the name of free computer training to the kids and families of the personnel of BSF,CISF,ITBP,CRPF and other state police organisations.

He had asserted that Bedi is liable to be prosecuted for various offences including sections 420 (cheating),406 (criminal breach of trust),477A (falsification of accounts) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC.

The police had in January told the court that probe has revealed that Microsoft had provided Rs 48 lakh to Bedi’s NGO,India Vision Foundation (IVF),besides 62 laptops and two desktop computers for promoting computer education.

It stated Vedanta Foundation informed the police that IVF was to impart computer education among police authorities and 70 percent of its expenses was to be born by Vedanta as donation to IVF.
