Though he makes no secret of his desire to become the prime minister,RJD chief Lalu Prasad has now said he is not averse to backing a Dalit for the top job.
“I will back any move for a Dalit as the prime minister of the country,” he said, commenting on the remark made by Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) president Ramvilas Paswan.
“My good friend Lalu Prasad ji has run the full course. It’s time I led the UPA in Bihar and if given the chance, the country,” Paswan had said in an interview published on Sunday.
On Paswan’s demand for 20 of the state’s 40 Lok Sabha seats,Lalu said,”It is okay with me. Paswan is a tall leader in Bihar and there is nothing wrong with the demand.”
“It is fine if he wants to go it all alone in the elections. LJP as also the Congress are independent political entities. If they want to contest all the seats nobody can stop them,” Lalu said.
However, senior RJD leader and Union minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh differed, saying,”The UPA together won 29 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar in 2004. While RJD fielded 26 candidates of whom 22 won,Paswan set up eight and won four and Congress fielded four and won three. There remain only 11 seats the alliance partners can sit and discuss.”
