Kolkata MoC yet to learn about Mother Teresa’s canonisation

The Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata is yet to receive any official communication in this regard.

Reports in a section of the media published today regarding Mother Teresa being canonized in September 2016 when Vatican celebrates her work with the poor of Kolkata as part of the upcoming silver jubilee celebrations was greeted with cheers and joy at the Missionaries of Charity headquarters in Kolkata.

Sunita Kumar, a spokesperson for the Missionaries of Charity said: “It is the most wonderful thing that can happen to the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata.

But she clarified that the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata is yet to receive any official communication in this regard till Wednesday evening. “But it might come any moment,” said Kumar if the Vatican has approved the ceremony. Kumar said that she had also been listening to such reports but she is yet to get a confirmation in this regard.

Mother Teresa’s canonisation has been pending for a long time after her death on September, 5, 1997. During these time attempts have been made to fast track the process for declaring her as a saint by the Vatican.

It may be recalled that in 2013, Mother Teresa was beatified and blessed as the “Teresa of Calcutta, “by the Vatican. Beatification is a process in the way of attaining sainthood.

The media reports today quoting AFP stated that Archbishop Salvatore was quoted by Italian media confirming the news. A celebration of the memory of Teresa has been scheduled for September 5, 2016 as part of the jubilee programme of events and Archbishop Salvatore Fisichella said that Mother Teresa would be canonized a day before on September 4, 2016.

The report also mentioned about a Vatican spokesman saying that the canonization decision of Mother Teresa is yet to be approved and it was premature to talk of this date having already been fixed.
