Was it an elaborate elopement plan hatched by a relative of the 16-year-old Faridkot girl in connivance with the girl’s ‘boyfriend” that went awry and took the shape of an abduction at gun point?

As per the informed sources, the Punjab Police is now seriously looking into the role played by the said person,a relative of the minor girl from her mother’s family. The person, the police has not yet divulged his name, was in constant touch with both the girl’s family and the alleged boyfriend- abductor,19-year-old Nishan Singh.

Sources said that during the investigations,it came to light that the said person had on September 21 met Dimpy Samra,a local Akali leader and Nishan’s maternal uncle. The duo spoke to Nishan on phone and finalised the plan for his elopement with the girl for September 24.

The initial plan was that the said relative of the girl, after taking her parents’ consent, would take her shopping to Bathinda and from there she was to elope with Nishan. However, the plan could not work out.

On September 24,Nishan and his three friends, after getting a tip-off from the said person, reached near the girl’s home in the morning. One of Nishan’s friends signalled the girl to come out,but she couldn’t as the doors were locked. At around 9 am,when the girl’s elder sister opened the door to go out,Nishan and his friends barged in. As they were trying to take away the girl, the family members resisted following which the four youths attacked them with rods and fired in the air while fleeing.

The girl and Nishan then left for Chandigarh where they met latter’s friend Vikram Beniwal at his Sector 33 house. Beniwal, who is now under arrest, took them to a hotel in Sector 22. Next day,the duo went to Panchkula where one Avtar promised to get them driving licenses issued under fake names — Gurpreet Singh and Jasmeet Kaur. Avtar also gave them photocopies of a fake identity card,in the name of Suraj Kamboj, which Nishan used to get a SIM card for his cellphone in Goa.

During the interrogation,Nishan told the police that he had met his mother and Dimpy Samra in Chandigarh and they had dropped them (Nishan and the girl) at Ambala. When they reached Delhi,a man sent by Avtar handed them the fake driving licences.

The Punjab Police has already formed teams to trace and arrest Avtar.

Sources said that the girl’s relative called up Nishan’s mother and told her to flee as the Punjab Police was looking for her. She left with Samra. On the other, sources said,he allegedly told the girl’s parents to sit on dharna and also led the protests to deflect attention.

“Before we call the relative of the girl for questioning, all angles will be verified. Also, these facts were told to police by one of the accused,” an officer who is a part of the investigating team said.

Even as facts point towards elopement, the police has maintained that will seek prosecution of all the accused on charged of kidnapping a minor girl. Also they will be charged for trespass, assault, causing hurt, intimidation and under arms act.
