4 killed in accidents while on way to immerse idols

4 persons died and 38 others were injured in separate accidents while they were on way to immerse the idol of Goddess Durga.

Four persons,including a teenager,died and 38 others were injured in separate accidents today while they were on way to immerse the idol of Goddess Durga during the puja festivities.

Three men,in their late twenties,were killed and 38 others injured when a truck turned turtle on Nelson Mandela Road in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj around 2.45 pm.

Around 40 men,all of them in the age group of 25-30 years,were on way to Kalindi Kunj from Kapashera to immerse the idol when the speeding truck first hit a divider and then turned turtle,a senior police official said.

While identities of two of the deceased were established as Ajit and Satyanarayan,the third one is yet to be identified,the official said.

Ajit and the unidentified man succumbed to injuries in hospital while Satyanarayan died on the spot.

Out of the 38 injured,27 are undergoing treatment in AIIMS Trauma Centre while 12 are admitted in Safdurjung hospital. Two of them are taken to the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre.

A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against Kapil,the truck driver who is absconding.

In the second incident,17-year-old Arvind drowned in Yamuna in Timarpur this afternoon while he was immersing an idol of Goddess Durga in Yamuna river. The victim is a resident of Nangloi.

His body was fished out around 4 pm by fire brigade officials. The body has been sent for post mortem.
