2 SP workers held for firing during cycle rally

Earlier Mulayam Singh had categorically directed party workers to desist from unlawful activities during cycle rallies.

The Meerut police arrested two Samajwadi Party workers for indulging in firing during cycle rally Tuesday. The party is taking out cycle rallies across the state as part of its campaign for Lok Sabha polls between February 1-7.

Ghulam Mohammad, MLA from Meerut’s Siwalkhas constituency and party candidate from Baghpat parliamentary constituency, was leading the cycle rally when SP workers opened fire. Circle Officer of Sardhana area, Shwetabh Pandey said the culprits have been identified as Sarfaraz and Aas Mohammad. “Both of them have been arrested and a case has been registered against them,” Pandey said.

“They are SP workers and we have sent a report for cancellation of their licensed firearms,” confirmed Pandey.

The incident took place at Jani Khurd village in Meerut Monday where nearly 100 workers of SP had gathered for the cycle rally, which was being lead by MLA Ghulam Mohammad Khan.

Earlier Mulayam Singh had categorically directed party workers to desist from unlawful activities during cycle rallies, which may malign the party image. He had also warned the workers, during a meeting at Lucknow recently, to avoid visiting shops during cycle rallies as opponents may ransack shops and blame it on them.
