The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF),on Friday, claimed that some Sikh individuals had privately reported that they had received additional threats after the shooting incident at a Wisconsin gurdwara. The organisation stated that the murder of Dalbir Singh (56) comes in the wake of the largest tragedy in Sikh American history and community members are openly wondering whether the murder is connected to the massacre that took place in the same state just ten days prior.
Less than a week after the gurdwara shooting,SALDEF claims that a member of the Oak Creek Sikh community stopped his car at an intersection next to a pickup truck whose driver then proceeded to manipulate his thumb and pointer-finger to make the shape of a gun,and pulled the trigger while mouthing the words This isnt over yet.
Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Police Department is treating the killing as a robbery gone bad and has been unable to determine a motive. US Attorney James Santelle has assured the community that the motive of this crime is thoroughly investigated.
Increasing vitriol
SALDEF stated that by framing the Oak Creek massacre as an isolated incident,…we delude ourselves into thinking of it as a randomised event carried out by a troubled individual. But Sikh Americans are not the only targets. Anti-Muslim vitriol in this country has reached an all-time high. Seven mosques have been attacked in the past 11 days and another was razed in Joplin. Pig feet were thrown at a mosque in California and paintballs were shot at a mosque in Oklahoma City. There has also been an incident where homemade chemical bombs were lobbed at a mosque in Chicago.
While the assailants intent in murdering Dalbir Singh remains to be determined, the very fact that we are considering hate as a possible motive speaks volumes about the condition of our nation. Were in trouble. These are symptoms of a larger problem, the organisation stated.
Badal writes to PM
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal,on Friday, expressed profound grief over the killing of Milwaukee (US) resident Dalbir Singh (56) who was shot dead by an unidentified gunman on Wednesday. Badal has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take up the matter with US Administration to curb such incidents of brutal violence and ensure safety and security of minorities, and Sikhs in particular.
