After court sentence, Maharashtra minister Kokate stripped off portfolios

The move comes soon after a Nashik sessions court upheld the two-year prison sentence awarded to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)'s Kokate.

Maharashtra minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Manikarao Kokate was stripped off his portfolios of Sports and Minority Affairs late Wednesday.

The development comes a day after the Nashik sessions court convicted him and awarded him two-year imprisonment for tampering with documents to acquire a government flat.

“As of now he continues to be the minister without a portfolio. The decision about his resignation will be taken soon. The portfolios will now be with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar,” said a senior NCP leader.

Throughout Wednesday, Kokate was unavailable  for comments as he was admitted to Lilavati Hospital due to ill health, while NCP leaders, including Ajit Pawar, were busy with meetings.

According to sources, NCP state chief Sunil Tatkare was to meet Pawar late Wednesday night to discuss decision on Kokate’s ministership.

Earlier in the day, Kokate had approched the Bombay High Court, challenging the verdict.

Kokate, an MLA from Sinnar constituency in Nashik district, was convicted in connection with 1995 case pertaining to illegal acquisition of flats under the Chief Minister’s discretionary quota. His criminal revision application was mentioned before a single-judge bench of Justice Rajesh N Laddha in post-lunch session on Wednesday.

In August 2024, Kokate was removed from his earlier portfolio of Agriculture after he was allegedly photographed playing cards on mobile. He was later reinstated as the Sports and Minority Affairs minister while the Agriculture portfolio was given to Pawar confidante Dattatray Bharne.

Earlier this year, another NCP Minister Dhananjay Munde had to resign after his aide Walmik Karad was allegedly linked to the murder of Beed district’s Massajog village sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh.
