The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association on Tuesday said an FIR has been registered by the Punjab Police against officials of CIA-1, Hisar, following its demands in connection with the alleged assault on an advocate at Nayagaon, though the case has been booked against unknown persons so far.

In a notice issued by its honorary secretary Gagandeep Jammu, the Bar Association said its executive committee has demanded that the names of the concerned police officials be specifically incorporated in the FIR with additions of appropriate penal sections, and the station house officer concerned be transferred and or placed under suspension.

The association said competent authorities have assured that requisite action will be taken expeditiously. It has called a meeting of the general house at 1 pm on December 18 to deliberate on the developments. Till the demands are fully met, the abstention from work will continue, the notice said, while placing on record appreciation for the unity and discipline shown by members during the protest.

The development comes a day after the Punjab and Haryana High Court took suo motu cognisance of the alleged assault on advocate Amit Duhan by Haryana Police personnel in plainclothes at Nayagaon on November 30 and directed the Punjab Director General of Police to file an affidavit within 24 hours explaining why no FIR had been registered, despite the complaint disclosing cognisable offences.

Chief Justice Sheel Nagu had also urged the lawyers to resume work as soon as possible while highlighting the grave inconvenience caused to litigants.

During the hearing, Bar Association president S S Narula informed the bench that the general house had resolved not to resume work until an FIR was registered. He also flagged repeated grievances against the Nayagaon police station, alleging inaction on complaints by advocates involving cognisable offences.
