As many as 40 Congress MLAs — nearly half the party’s strength in the assembly — have written a letter to state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre complaining on a variety of issues including funds allocation, ministerial berths and appointments to PSU boards.

The show of resentment follows a walk-out by a dozen-odd MLAs after a Congress Legislature Party meeting on July 9,indicating the growing restlessness within a section of the Congress.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Manikrao Thakre admitted on Tuesday that he did receive a letter “about two weeks back”,but denied that it was a petition against Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan’s style of functioning.

“I have not received any letter from any MLA complaining against the chief minister, nor expressing any anger against him. All our MLAs are standing firmly behind him,” Thakre said.

Reports had suggested that Congress MLAs,piggy-backing on the Nationalist Congress Party’s complaints against the CM,had collected signatures of over 40 MLAs and petitioned the party to replace Chavan with a new chief minister.

This “letter”,leaked to a section of the media,is on plain paper and bears no date. It is addressed to Thakre and copied to the AICC leader in charge of Maharashtra Mohan Prakash. It says that several issues need urgent resolution, and seeks a meeting with party leaders and the chief minister to discuss these.

The issues raised in the letter are: giving ministerial berths to legislators including independents supporting the party from Vidarbha and Marathwada, allocation of the Mining Development Fund according to the advice of local MLAs,making appointments to boards,PSUs and semi-government bodies, appointing the chiefs of the Minorities Commission and the Haj Committee, formation of statutory development boards, etc.

The letter does not mention any specific pending project or file awaiting the chief minister’s nod.
