Fed up with huge power bills, Kerala man kills wife and son over using AC at home

Police said Paul used to have a brawl with his wife and son over spiraling electricity bill.

An 81-year-old man in Kerala’s Ernakulam district was arrested on charges of clubbing his wife and son to death over a discord regarding using air-conditioner in their house.

Police identified the arrested as Naduvil Paul, a retired Railway employee, and the victims, his wife Mary, 74 and son Thomas, 54.

Police said Paul used to have a brawl with his wife and son over spiraling electricity bill. Last month’s power bill had touched Rs 4,000. Hence, he suggested his wife and son to avoid using the air-conditioner in the room.

On Friday night too, Paul warned them against using the air-conditioner. But, they did not budge. In the wee hours of Saturday, Paul saw the air conditioner functioning in the room used by his wife and son, a divorcee, who had returned from Gulf. An enraged Paul reportedly hit both of them using an iron rod. They bled to death at home.

Later, Paul himself informed his three other wards, settled elsewhere, about the incident. He also alerted the local people, who rushed to the house but could not save the lives.

Police said Paul’s family had no financial issues. He was drawing Rs 20,000 as pension and has properties.
