In fresh row, Tamil Nadu Governor asks students to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’
The State Platform for Common School System-Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN) condemned Ravi's action and demanded his removal for “violating his oath of office”. It said Ravi had violated the Constitution by chanting the “name of the God of a particular religion” at a public function.

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi has triggered a fresh row for allegedly asking students to chant “Jai Shri Ram” during an event at a government-aided college in Madurai.
On Saturday, Ravi was invited as chief guest to distribute prizes to the winners of a literary contest. A purported video clip of the event shows him congratulating the winners. “This gives us the confidence that our roots are strong. It is there and we need to build on it. We take this as a movement,” he says, before going on to add, “You chant after me, Jai Shri Ram.”
Prompted by him, the students then chant the slogan thrice.
On Sunday, the State Platform for Common School System-Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN) condemned Ravi’s action and demanded his removal for “violating his oath of office”. It said Ravi had violated the Constitution by chanting the “name of the God of a particular religion” at a public function.
“Mr RN Ravi has taken oath under Article 159 of the Constitution of India and in his oath he had affirmed that he will, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and the law, and that he will devote himself to the service and well-being of the people of Tamil Nadu. On April 12, Mr RN Ravi failed to preserve, defend and protect the Constitution of India by chanting the name of the God of a particular religion and asking the students to repeat the same thrice,” it said in a statement.

The SPCSS-TN — an outfit formed to take up pressing issues of students, especially with regard to the NEET row — has also written to President Droupadi Murmu demanding Ravi’s removal from office.
Speaking to The Indian Express, P B Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary of the outfit, said: “We hope that the President takes our request into consideration and removes him from office for violating his oath to the Constitution”.
Ravi has recently been in the news with regard to a Supreme Court order, which said that his decision to reserve 10 Bills for consideration of the President after they had already been reconsidered by the State Assembly was illegal and erroneous. On Saturday, the Tamil Nadu government invoked the Supreme Court order to notify the 10 laws as having taken effect without his assent.
