An FIR has been registered against the five students under sections of attempted murder and rioting.
Five students of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee have been booked for attempted murder after they allegedly smashed glass bottles on the head of a collegemate, police said.
According to police, the incident took place around 11 pm on March 23 when the victim, Ajit Kumar Keshri, 23, was attacked outside the campus. Keshri is from Jharkhand.
In his complaint to the police, he alleged that the five accused smashed glass bottles on his head and attacked him as he fell to the ground. The MTech student said: “They attacked me from behind with large glass bottles with the intent to kill me. They smashed three glass bottles on my head, causing me to collapse. After that, they kicked and punched me, targeting my face, nose, and eyes until I lost consciousness. When I regained consciousness, I found myself in my college hospital, where doctors provided primary treatment. Given my condition, the college ambulance shifted me to Max Hospital, Dehradun, where I was admitted to the ICU the next day”.
Keshri alleged that he had previously lodged written complaints with the college administration regarding these students, both via email and in person. “As a precaution, the administration had provided me with a security guard for two days for my safety. It is important to note that one of the attackers, Nitin Pratap Singh, is an expelled student of the college and is frequently involved in unlawful activities on campus,” he added.
Roorkee Circle Officer Narendra Pant said that an altercation took place while a college fest was underway on campus. “The two parties got into a fight outside the campus after this. We have not arrested the accused as the evidence is being collected,” he added.
An FIR has been registered against the five students under sections of attempted murder and rioting. When contacted, a staff member from IIT Roorkee said it was a “private matter” and had nothing to do with the institute.
