No 50-50 deal with Shiv Sena, I will be CM for next 5 years: Devendra Fadnavis

Fadnavis added that the Sena was not promised the CM's post for two-and-a-half-years during pre-poll negotiations.

Effectively ruling out a 50:50 power-sharing formula with ally Shiv Sena, Devendra Fadnavis Tuesday said that he will be Maharashtra Chief Minister for another five years, news agency PTI reported. Speaking to reporters at his residence in Mumbai, Fadnavis added that the Sena was not promised the CM’s post for two-and-a-half-years during pre-poll negotiations.

“The Shiv Sena was not promised CM’s post for two-and-a-half years when the alliance was formalised before the Lok Sabha polls,” Fadnavis was quoted as saying by PTI. He added that the BJP-led alliance would ensure a “stable and efficient” government for next five years.

Reacting to the remarks, Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut indicated said “we need to change the definition of truth”. “If he is saying that the ’50-50 formula’ was never discussed, then I think we need to change the definition of truth. What was discussed, regarding the issue the CM is talking about, is known by all. The media was there,” ANI quoted him as saying.

The two saffron parties have been engaged in a bitter tussle over the Chief Minister’s post. The Sena has demanded a 50:50 power-sharing formula with a rotational CM post. It has sought a written agreement from the BJP on the same.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, BJP secured only 105 seats in the 288-member House and has to rely on Sena, which won 56 seats in the House, to form the government.

Fadnavis Tuesday said the BJP would elect its legislative party leader on Wednesday. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already announced the name and the meeting will be a formality,” he said. PM Modi had said during campaigning that Fadnavis would lead the coalition government.

Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray last week reminded the BJP of the 50:50 power-sharing formula that was purportedly “agreed upon” between himself, BJP president Amit Shah and Fadnavis ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
