The security personnel of the New Civil Hospital in Surat caught a man who was wearing a stethoscope around his neck and posing as a doctor on Friday. The man was handed over to the police after he was found to be drunk. He has been booked in a prohibition case and later arrested on Friday evening, the police said.

According to the police, the man was loitering on the fourth floor of the kidney building which houses the medicine ward. The nurse of the ward grew suspicious as she had seen the man for the first time and confronted the man. However, he could not give a satisfactory reply. She then called the security guards and subsequently, he was taken to the office of the Medical Superintendent.

Much later, he was handed over to the Khatodara police on Friday evening. The man was identified as Shivaji Rao, a resident of Sagrampura and a native of Maharashtra.

Khatodara police inspector B R Rabari said, “We have done a medical examination of Shivaji Rao, 49, at the New Civil Hospital and found him to be drunk and arrested him. The accused had earlier worked as a male nurse in a private hospital but was jobless for the last few months. His wife still works at a private hospital in Surat. We are questioning him to find out the reason behind him walking in the hospital with a stethoscope.”
