After suspending a total of 15 MPs on Day 11 of the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, the Lok Sabha Thursday withdrew the suspension of DMK MP S R Parthiban, who was not even present during the alleged disruption of proceedings in the House. The move came after the government, in a letter, told Speaker Om Birla that it was a “case of mistaken identity.”

A revised circular issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat did not mention Parthiban’s name and only listed the 13 other Lok Sabha MPs who have been suspended. Now, the total number of MPs suspended for the remainder of the Winter session stands at 14 — 13 from Lok Sabha and TMC’s Derek O’Brien from Rajya Sabha.

Stating that it was a mistake on the part of the staff in identifying the member, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said: “I have requested the speaker to drop the name of the member as it was a case of mistaken identity.”  The speaker has agreed to the suggestion, he added.

Speaking to The Indian Express on Thursday evening, S R Parthiban, who represents Salem constituency, said his name being listed in the suspension list of opposition MPs was a “joke”. “I wasn’t there today as I am unwell,” he said.

Parthiban has a background in law and agriculture, and won with a sizable margin of 1.46 lakh votes in 2019. He is known for raising issues such as loan waivers, fair pricing, and improved working conditions, and takes a keen interest in sectors of local education, healthcare and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, talking about the other suspensions, Joshi said the 13 MPs violated a decision taken at the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting by bringing placards to the House and hence, were suspended.

When the business of the House shifted to the new Parliament building, the speaker had proposed at a meeting of BAC that the members have to work with a fresh resolve of not showing placards in the House. The proposal was unanimously agreed upon, as per Joshi.
