Following an accident involving the Coromandel Express on Friday night, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M K Stalin had a telephonic conversation with his Odisha counterpart, Naveen Patnaik. The train was bound for Chennai from Howrah.
In response, a delegation led by Tamil Nadu’s Transport Minister, S S Sivasankar, is due to depart from Chennai on Saturday morning for the site of the accident in Odisha.
Sivasankar said that Chief Minister Stalin appealed to Odisha’s Patnaik for assistance, and for information m regarding the passengers potentially present on the train during the accident. As of late Friday, the Tamil Nadu government was still to receive the list of passengers from the state who were travelling on the train.
According to Sivasankar, senior government officials from Tamil Nadu are in constant communication with their Odisha counterparts to organise the necessary assistance and exchange more details about the accident. “We are waiting for more details,” he added.
The government has made public the helpline numbers for any enquiries or information about passengers who were on board the Coromandel Express.
An official in charge at the MGR Chennai Central Station said a dedicated helpline desk has been set up at the station. “We are yet to receive specific enquiries, we are still awaiting passenger information,” he said.
Following the accident, Southern Railway announced the cancellation of two trains including (Train No.12863) Howrah – Sir M.Viswesraya Bengaluru Terminal Super Fast Express (via Katpadi / Jolarpettai) leaving Howrah at 22.55 of 2nd June 2023, and (Train No.12839) Howrah – Dr MGR Chennai Central Mail leaving Howrah at 23.55 of 2nd June 2023.
