Businessman Gopal Khemka shot dead near his residence in Patna, 6 years after son’s similar killing

According to police, the shooting occurred around 11:40 pm near Ram Gulam Chowk as Khemka was getting out of his car near the Twin Tower residential complex, adjacent to Hotel Panache. He was shot at close range by unidentified assailants and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

City Superintendent of Police (Central), Diksha, said that a forensic team was called to the scene and recovered a bullet and a shell casing. “We received information that businessman Gopal Khemka had been shot dead in the south area of Gandhi Maidan. As soon as the information was received, police responded by reaching the hospital and then the crime scene,” she said.

Gopal Khemka was a prominent figure in Patna’s business community.

“We are examining CCTV footage. It is suspected that the assailants came on a bike. We are further investigating the matter from all angles to find further details and motive,” Diksha added.

The incident comes at a time when the Nitish Kumar-led BJP-JD(U) government has come under fire from the Opposition who allege lawlessness in the state. Hours earlier, in another incident, three people were killed and two others injured in Siwan.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, hitting out at the state government, had tweeted: “Massacre in Bihar! Six people shot in Siwan! Three died on the spot! Under the leadership of an unconscious Chief Minister, law and order have collapsed!”

Following the killing of Khemka, Purnea MP Pappu Yadav took to X to say, “GuNDAraj in Bihar. In the capital, Patna, near Gandhi Maidan, a prominent industrialist, Gopal Khemka, has been murdered! Sharm se doob maro sarkar…”

In another post, Yadav added “…Seven years ago, Gopal Khemka’s son, Gunjan Khemka, was murdered. I had assured the family of justice. If the government had taken strict action against the criminals then, Gopal Khemka would not have been killed today… But in this cruel maha GuNDAraj, no one is safe. Bihar has become a haven for criminals. Nitish Ji, please spare Bihar.”
