In the G20 Agriculture Working Group, a broad consensus seems emerging on two key proposals — MAHARISHI, a millet initiative, and the ‘Deccan High Level Principles on food security and nutrition — which were moved by India during its G20 presidency, it is learnt. The Deccan High Level Principles mooted by New Delhi in response to the global food crisis have been discussed during the Agriculture Deputies Meetings under the Agriculture Working Group and now are placed before the G20 Agriculture Ministers, who are meeting in Hyderabad (June 15-17). The principles include the following: humanitarian aid to countries in vulnerable situation; enhancing access to nutritious food and strengthening food safety nets; policies for climate-resilient agriculture; innovation and the use of digital technology for agriculture and food systems; and investment in agriculture. Sources said that a “broad consensus” has emerged on these principles during discussions in the agriculture working group’s meetings held under India’s G20 presidency. Sources said a consensus also seems to be emerging on the millet initiative, which has now been christened as Millets and Other Ancient Grains International Research Initiative (MAHARISHI). It is aimed at encouraging the consumption and production of millets.
