Netflix’s beloved franchise, and undeniably a commercial banger, Stranger Things has finally dropped the release date and first official teaser for Season 5. But the finale of the Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp, and Sadie Sink-starrer isn’t ready to draw the curtain just yet. The makers are stretching the final season not into two, but three parts, dragging the suspense all the way to New Year’s Eve. So, consider your year-end plans officially booked. To mark the moment, cast members Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, and Caleb McLaughlin showed up to deliver a nostalgia-packed behind-the-scenes look at their journey on the show.
As for the official synopsis, the story is set in the fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by one mission: find and kill Vecna. During its biggest live event, Tudum, Netflix rolled out a number of announcements: Squid Game Season 3, Wednesday Season 2, and the return of One Piece Season 2.
Split into three volumes, the Duffer Brothers’ show finale will release as follows:
Volume 1, November 26, 5 pm PT (5:30 am IST)
Volume 2, Christmas, 5 pm PT
The Finale, New Year’s Eve, 5 pm PT
The plan to release the Stranger Things finale in 3 parts likely follows the recent trend, as seen in shows like Cobra Kai Season 4, and even some K-dramas like Squid Game, which was supposed to drop Season 2 in two parts but ended up renaming the second half as Season 3 because of the delay. Earlier, Stranger Things Season 4 was also split into two, with the first volume ending on the biggest cliffhanger, a move that created maximum buzz and helped the platform retain subscribers for a longer period, until the next drop. This time, though, the makers have said episodes will be lengthier than before, so fans might not feel shortchanged on content. Still, for those who like to binge it all in one shot, the staggered release might feel like a tease. But the OTT platform’s not about to miss its last chance to cash in on the franchise. Stretching out binge drops has become the norm anyway.
The almost two-minute teaser clip of Stranger Things Season 5 glimpses the return of fan-favourites, Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, Millie Bobby Brown back as Eleven, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, and Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, with the whole gang officially confirmed. Season 4 dropped in the summer of 2022, and after a wait of over two years, the show is finally making its comeback this November.
There are a few new faces this time around: Linda Hamilton, Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, and Alex Breaux have joined the cast.
The official synopsis of Stranger Things season 5 reads: “The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.”
