From the classic Little Women (1994) to the more recent Lady Bird (2017) and Barbie (2023), Hollywood has often excelled in delivering compelling coming-of-age dramas centered around women. However, in Hindi cinema, while actors like Ranbir Kapoor have championed the genre with films like Tamasha and Rockstar, heartwarming coming-of-age dramas focusing on women remains a rare occurrence. The recently released trailer of Nitya Mehra’s web show Big Girls Don’t Cry promises to bridge this gap further.

The series stars Avantika Vandanapu, Aneet Padda, Dalai, Vidushi, Lhakyila, Afrah Sayed, and Akshita Sood in lead roles. The trailer begins by introducing a strict boarding school, with its principal (played by Pooja Bhatt) claiming the institution has played a role in shaping society and the country. However, the following scenes quickly reveal the irony of her statement as students engage in various mischievous activities behind her back.

The trailer explores the relationships among the lead characters, evoking a ‘Mean Girls’ vibe when a student from a small town is mocked as having “full kanya vidyalaya vibes.” Friendships are tested, hostel life is depicted in full swing, and hearts are broken. Some characters grapple with their sexual identity, while others confront bullying from entitled peers. Amid the complexities of relationships and academic pressures, the girl gang discovers their true voices, questioning whether this is what growing up means.

The predominantly women-led ensemble cast also includes Pooja Bhatt, Raima Sen, and Zoya Hussain in pivotal roles, alongside Mukul Chadda. Previously, Ananya Panday introduced the star cast of Big Girls Don’t Cry through a fun video on Instagram. Interestingly, Avantika Vandanapu recently made ample headlines for bagging the role of the gullible Karen in the new film Mean Girls. Amanda Seyfried played the role of Karen in the original 2004 film.

Created by Nitya Mehra, the series is co-directed by Sudhanshu Saria, Karan Kapadia, and Kopal Naithani. It will release on Amazon Prime Video on March 14.
