The Great Indian Kapil Show 3rd episode first impression: Sunil Grover adds glitter to Diljit Dosanjh-Parineeti Chopra’s Chamkila party, Kapil Sharma finally gets it right

After the first two lukewarm episodes of The Great Indian Kapil Show, Kapil Sharma finally regained his mojo, serving up fresh characters and razor-sharp sketch comedy that fans have been expecting from the new show.

The third time’s a charm, they say, and boy, did Kapil Sharma and his gang prove that right with the latest episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show. After the first two lukewarm episodes, Sharma finally regained his mojo, serving up fresh characters and razor-sharp sketch comedy that fans have been expecting from the new show.

The show saw Imtiaz Ali, Diljit Dosanjh, and Parineeti Chopra promoting their latest flick Amar Singh Chamkila. The only complaint one might have from the latest episode is its short runtime. Clocking in at a mere 38 minutes, it felt more like a movie promo than a full-fledged show. Yet, credit is due to the writers who, despite the time constraint, made every second count and delivered a comedy knockout.

The highlight of the new episode was Krushna Abhishek and Kiku Sharda turning up in new characters of American former President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, respectively. Abhishek nailed his imitation of Trump’s voice, speech patterns and mannerisms, bringing back memories from 2020 when Trump tried and failed to pronounce Indian names during his official visit to India. Sharda was also a delight as he impersonated Kim.

In real life, given the ongoing tensions between the US and North Korea, Trump received a lot of backlash for his praise of the authoritarian North Korean leader during his presidency. However, Abhishek and Sharda’s comedic banter on the show offered a humorous take on their forbidden bond. It also felt like the audience has been transported to one of the Late Night Shows, but with a desi twist. Keep an eye out for scenes where Trump demonstrates how to eat pan masala to Kim, and their synchronized dance to Chamkila’s “Ishq Mitaye” — the chemistry between them is simply palpable.

The guests – Parineeti Chopra, Imtiaz Ali, and Diljit Dosanjh – were instrumental in the third episode’s success. They seamlessly embraced the show’s vibe and were visibly enjoying themselves. While Chopra couldn’t stop laughing and hooting all along the show, Dosanjh’s witty comebacks to Kapil Sharma’s funny jabs took the cake. The addition of a guessing game added another layer of entertainment, which saw Chopra catch Dosanjh cheating. Seeing a calm and collected Dosanjh enunciating words to an equally composed Ali, both sporting noise-cancelling earphones, was pure comedy gold.

Staying true to the episode’s theme, Sunil Grover dazzled in the most sparkly saree as Dafli. While it’s typical for celebrities to feel a bit shy when Dafli starts flirting, Dosanjh jumped right into the banter, delivering witty comebacks that had the audience in stitches.

There is no denying that apart from being an ace comedian Kapil Sharma excels as a talk show host. He effortlessly puts even the most reserved celebrities at ease, using in-between comedy sessions to draw out their experiences in a relatable manner for the audience. However, lately, the unique gags and sketch comedy segments that defined Sharma’s shows have been absent from The Great Indian Kapil Show. Fortunately, the comedian redeemed himself in the third episode, cranking up the comedy to full blast.

The third episode also revealed a looming challenge for the show’s OTT transition. On television, Sharma’s show had nearly an hour-long runtime, allowing ample time to develop comedic sketches. However, on the OTT platform, they must condense their sketches to fit within a much shorter timeframe of 5-10 minutes, requiring quicker introductions of new characters and punchier comedy delivery.

Following the release of the 3rd episode, the makers treated fans to a sneak peek of the next episode, featuring Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal. With Sunil Grover bringing his A-game, the episode appears to promise another laugh riot. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it delivers the same level of laughter as this one did!
