The sudden demise of Robo Shankar has taken the entire Tamil film industry by shock. The 46-year-old actor fainted on the sets of a film and was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Chennai, where he breathed his last on September 18. According to reports, the actor, who recovered from jaundice years ago, had been struggling with health issues in recent years.
In one of his last interviews, Robo Shankar, who had lost significant weight due to jaundice, reflected on how his early modeling career and lifestyle choices contributed to his poor health. He said, “I used to prepare for the Mr. India competition in bodybuilding. Those days, I used to paint my whole body in metallic paint by 6 am and stand before those lights for two to three hours and dance and perform, and attend six shows like that daily. This used to go on daily, and I used to apply these oils to get rid of the pain and go for other programs the next day without rest. So I got jaundice at a young age. But we sought treatment at Kalanivasal centre.”

The comedian also revealed that his irregular eating habits in recent times had triggered a relapse of jaundice. “Recently, my food habits have been very irregular. I don’t follow any diet in particular. So jaundice came back. I usually don’t feel hungry these days. I had these extensive shooting schedules in foreign locations and I used to survive without food there as I am that kind of person. So, last January, when we checked, it had become very severe. It was almost as if my chapter had come to a close,” said Shankar.
Robo Shankar passed away due to complications from gastrointestinal bleeding and multi-organ dysfunction caused by a complex abdominal condition. Several prominent figures from the film industry, including Kamal Haasan, Sivakarthikeyan, and Vetrimaaran, paid their last respects to him and offered condolences to his family at the funeral held today in Chennai.
