A GAS grenade was found during digging work as part of renovation on the premises of a temple in the Mehboobpura area of Vadodara city on Tuesday, causing anxiety among residents.

According to the BDDS, the grenade – with a steel body – may be a remnant of a riot that may have happened over 40 years ago or part of an erstwhile police ammunition unit.

Although some local residents expressed apprehension that the grenade may have been “placed” or “left behind” at the spot recently, the city police confirmed that the grenade was “at least 40 years old.”

Ashok Rathwa, Assistant Commissioner of Police, C Division, said, “Primarily, the grenade design appears to be at least 40 to 50 years old. The Navapura police informed BDDS. They (BDDS) confirmed that the grenade is inactive and dead.”

He added, “The grenade is of a make that was used four decades ago… It has visible marks of damage and mud as it was buried and so the possibility that someone left it there in the present time is remote… It is definitely not a new grenade. It is possible that there would have been an old chowki (at the spot) or that the gas grenade had been lobbed during a rioting incident back in those years and was eventually buried.”
