Unlike other industries, Tamil cinema, time and again, proves that release plans are not always written in stone. While there are reasons aplenty, ranging from post-production delays to overcrowding of releases, team Kanguva have come up with a rather poignant reason — Respect. At the audio launch of Karthi-Prem Kumar’s Meiyazhagan, which is backed by Suriya and Jyotika under their banner 2D Entertainment, fans were crying their throats hoarse about the much-awaited release update of Siva’s Kanguva. The makers of the big-budget period actioner had earlier announced that the film would be released on October 10 for the Dussehra holidays. However, with Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan also being scheduled for the same day, there were rumours that Kanguva might step back from the clash, and hit screens on a later date.

Addressing these speculations, Suriya clarified that these were actually true, and Kanguva is being pulled off the Dussehra race. In a heartfelt speech, Suriya said, “On October 10, Rajinikanth sir’s Vettaiyan is releasing. Respecting the Superstar’s 50-year legacy, and the fact that he has been entertaining us right from our birth, I think his film should come. He has been the identity of Tamil cinema, and I hope you will support my decision.”
Reiterating his trust in the love and support of his fans, Suriya said, “Kanguva is the efforts of over 1000 people for 2.5 years to deliver a really special film for Tamil cinema. I believe that hard work will not go to waste. I believe you would give the love and respect the film deserves.” Referring to Kanguva as a baby, and hoping its birthday whenever it is delivered will be a celebration, the actor said, “I hope you support me, and make the birthday a celebration, almost like a festival. Your love and support is always needed.”

With Suriya’s words confirming the rescheduling of Kanguva’s release plans, social media was abuzz with sections of Suriya fans expressing their utmost displeasure over this decision. While some said this benevolent attitude of Suriya is hardly being reciprocated by other stars considering this isn’t the first time his film is being rescheduled, some others felt bowing out of the race might be seen as a sign of weakness. Ardent Suriya fans, however, stood by their matinee idol’s decision, and entrusted their belief in the opinion that the big-budget actioner needs a solo release date to reach the widest audience possible, and become a profitable venture that would pave way for the proposed sequel.
