When it was announced that Ramya Krishnan is part of Jailer, the expectations from the film went several notches high. When the two stars came together back in 1999 for Padayappa, it resulted in one of the most memorable protagonist-antagonist duos in Tamil cinema. Speaking at Kaala audio launch, Rajinikanth recalled Neelambari as one of his favourite on-screen foes along with Raghuvaran’s Mark Antony from Baasaha. Neelambari, Ramya’s role in Padayappa, changed the course of her career. However, in a recent interview, Ramya said that she was hesitant to play the role.

Ramya, who made her debut in Malayalam with Neram Pularmbol in 1986, later moved to Tamil. However, when her initial films failed to make a mark, she tried her luck in Telugu. She starred opposite top stars like Nagarjuna, Venkatesh, and Rajasekhar. When the films there also consistently failed, she took up the antagonist role in Padayappa, which was her return to Tamil after a gap of about five years. While talking about doing item numbers and antagonist roles in films even during her formative years, she told Galatta Plus, “Sometimes I couldn’t say no. How can I say no to Padayppa, even though it is a negative character? I can’t say ‘I won’t do negative character because I am equal to Soundarya (Padayappa’s heroine) in Telugu.’ Negative is considered a level less than the heroine, no?”

Ramya Krishnan admits that she needed Padayappa at that point in her career. “It doesn’t matter if it is a first heroine or the second, I needed to be part of a Rajinikanth film as a career choice. It is a big film, which you need to be in the race. Luckily, it became the best decision for me… in my life.” Ramya added that she was not certain about her decision while doing the film. “I was unhappy with it. You know the scene where I put my foot on Soundarya’s face… the old get-up… in the back of my head, I was wondering what’s going to happen.”

Ramya said Padayappa and such odd choices are like a chain reaction that keeps getting her good roles like Rajamata Sivagami Devi in SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali films. “I never thought Baahubali was going to go that big. Maybe Rajamouli and everyone except me thought it would go big, but I never imagined it. I treated it as yet-another film and kept laying conditions like I will not shoot in the night… will give only a few days… thinking back I am wondering did I do that all for a film like Baahubali.”

When Ramya was asked about the superstardom that only a few people like Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi enjoy irrespective of their age, she said, “That’s actually beyond us to understand. You can’t even know how such a craze came into existence in the first place. If you take Rajinikanth sir, from a child to an old person, everyone reacts to his screen presence. How is it possible? It’s beyond us. It is hard to impress just one person in a party and he goes about impressing millions. There’s no logic to it. I don’t know if such stars would emerge after this era. Even if someone gets such a stardom, I don’t think it would last this long.”

Ramya Krishnan is playing the wife of Rajinikanth’s Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer, and she assures that people will see the performer in the superstar in the upcoming film. Jailer is releasing in theatres on August 10.
